Metrofuser Celebrates Earth Day – Achieves Another Environmental Milestone
Metrofuser (www.metrofuser.com) is spending earth week celebrating its reclamation of over 1.3 million pounds of used laser printer hardware through its recycling program since the company’s inception in 2003. In April 2011, Metrofuser will have reclaimed over 1.3 million pounds of technology and re-manufactured over 200,000 mechanical and electrical devices, returning them back into productive office use, many having 6-7 generation of life use.
Metrofuser’s Whole Business Model is Based on Recycling and Reuse
Metrofuser reclaims, remanufactures then resells components from office imaging machines such as laser printers and copiers. The business model is designed around acquiring assets which are otherwise destined for landfills and reintroducing the recoverable, repairable parts back into the technology ecosystem. In some cases, individual mechanical or electrical components are acquired while in others, the parts are removed from decommissioned printers. Metrofuser carefully removes, disassembles, cleans and ultimately remanufactures each component. Many of the parts can be reintroduced back into the office ecosystem up to a half-dozen times. The residual effect of these processes significantly diverts tons of electronic office equipment from our landfills.
Highlights from 2010
* Last Year, Metrofuser remanufactured 50,000 mechanical and electronic parts, diverting near 350,000 pounds of technology from ending up in landfills.
* In 2010, Metrofuser recycled over 96,000 pounds of cardboard and paper. The new e-invoicing program uses technology to reduce paper waste, while a companywide paper and cardboard recovery and recycling initiative has ensured that no recyclable paper products are thrown away.
* Metrofuser also recycled over 12,000 pounds of aluminum metal last year and is seeking to make sure that every unusable piece of equipment that cannot be a part of the remanufacturing process is reused and repurposed outside of the Metrofuser offices.
* Metrofuser’s Green Packaging Program boasts a 5-10 times lifecycle. Metrofuser encourages customers to return cores using the original packaging and is often able to reuse molds several times before they are compressed to 10% of their mass footprint with full support of a nationwide return & recycle program from the packaging vendor.

Laser printer parts manufacturer Metrofuser (www.metrofuser.com) was awarded a 2010 Managed Print Services Leadership Award last week by the Managed Print Services Association (MPSA). Metrofuser received second place honors as a top Infrastructure Logistical Provider and was presented the award during the 2010 North American MPS Conference in San Antonio, TX.
The MPSA used a balanced scorecard methodology based on core abilities, best practices and business benefits, giving the nod to Metrofuser in a highly competitive process.
"We are honored that the MPSA recognized our StockWorksMPS solution and other MPS support programs with this award," said Dennis Fotopoulos, Director of Strategic Business Development for Metrofuser.. He added, "We've worked hard to develop software-independent solutions that empowers our customers to be competitive across the growing MPS landscape no matter which MPS software or strategy they deploy."
According to Jim Fitzpatrick, President of the MPSA, "Metrofuser resolved one of the biggest problems that faces MPS Service dealers, which is how to stock and maintain parts for all of these units and still maintain a pofit margin with uncertain usage?"
The challenge is to have enough service parts available immediately to ensure quick service and break-fix response, but the inventory cost can be prohibitive.
Fitzpatrick added that, "Metrofuser applied some really out-of-the-box thinking, and developed a parts consignment
"pay as you go" model, outside of their other MPS offerings. The MPSA believes that with these solutions, Metrofuser shows true leadership in our industry. "
The MPSA said the high level of participation and competitiveness between companies showed the strength of the industry. The awards saw 53 companies from 12 countries competing in five categories.

Metrofuser Announces the Release of ZeroSet Technology for the Color LaserJet 4700/4730MFP Line of Printers.
Laser printer parts manufacturer Metrofuser (www.metrofuser.com) has introduced ZeroSet technology into their remanufactured HP LaserJet 4700 fusers. ZeroSet technology is a new remanufacturing solution that will automatically reset the fuser count to zero upon fuser installation. According to the HP LaserJet 4700 service manual, an OEM fuser "contains a fuseable link that is opened when a new fuser is first installed in the printer. This resets the page cound of the fuser to zero."
Before ZeroSet, remanufacturers have been distributing fusers that will either not reset the fuser count or have resorted to selling expensive OEM fusers to customers. Metrofuser's ZeroSet technology employs a fuseable link solution similar OEM fuser proprietary technology enabling Metrofusers remanufactured 4700 fuser to properly reset the fuser count to zero upon installation.
"Technicians have always reset page counts themselves, but HP has designed their fusers to reset the fuser page count automatically," said Mark Makuch, Operations Manager at Metrofuser, "With ZeroSet technology, techs can install our remanufactured fusers and be confident that the fuser count will automatically reset like it is supposed to."
"Remanufactured fusers without ZeroSet technology usually will not reset the fuser page count or clear the "REPLACE IMAGE FUSING UNIT" maintenance message," adds Will DeMuth, COO and co-President, "Not resetting the maintenance message or fuser count leaves the technician guessing about fuser life and risks them changing a fuser with thousands of pages worth of life left, or worse, over-extending the fuser potentially risking the printer going down.
